Sirmium was located near Belgrade, Serbia and evidence of occupation has been found dating back to 5000 BCE. The city itself existed at least since the 4th century BCE, when it was described as populated by Illyrians and Celts. It may have had 100,000 inhabitants at its peak.

Due to its strategic location, it was visited by the emperors Trajan, Marcus Aurelius, and Claudius II. Perhaps more Roman emperors were born in or around Sirmium than any other city outside of Rome (these numbers include nearby Siscia).

Some ruins of the ancient city remain.
