Serdica became Sofia, today the capital of Bulgaria. It received its name from the Serdi tribe, who were conquered by Crassus. It grew in importance under the reign of Trajan, then rebuilt by Marcus Aurelius after it was destroyed by the Costoboci.

Again the city rapidly grew in importance and the emperor Galerius was born there.

Some ruins of the ancient city remain today.
