Lokri Epizephyrii was founded in the 7th century BCE by settlers from Lokris, hence the name. It soon became one of the main cities of Magna Grecia.
Eventually, this put them in conflict with Kroton, who they defeated in the Battle of the Sagra. Later on, they forged an alliance with Syracuse.
In 277 BCE, Lokri surrendered to the Roman Empire. After the Battle of Cannae, it was taken by Carthage, who held it for ten years until it was finally retaken by Scipio Africanus. After this, the city’s influence waned
The foundations of the ruins still stand, though require significant imagination. Archeological excavations have revealed numerous treasures.
