Lamponeia was described by Strabo as an Aeolian city. Herodotus lists a Persian Otanes as having conquered it along with several others in the Troad.

It’s possible the inhabitants abandoned the city when neighboring Assos was founded. Some ruins exist today, notably the city wall.

512 BCE

Otanes, satrap of Phrygia, captures Antandros, Lamponeia, Imbros, Kalchedon, and Hephaistia and Myrina on Lemnos.
