Hadrianopolis in Thrace is modern day Edirne, Turkey, which lies close to the Bulgarian border. It was the second capital of the Ottoman Empire from the 1360’s to 1453, after which Constantinople became the capital. As the name indicates, it was founded by Hadrian, and is among many cities that bore his name. The city was the site of many battles.

Valens is killed at the Battle of Hadrianople by Gothic rebels. Gratian had earlier sent a letter begging his uncle Valens to wait for his arrival, but it was ignored.
