Today, although we do know the location of ancient Rhizous, we don’t know much else about it except that Demetrios I Poliorketes moved its entire population to his newly created city of Demetrias in 294 BCE.
Its coins depict a female head, mostly believed to be Artemis, who was the goddess of hunting, and an eight-pointed star that is used on the coinage of several other cities. This particular coin, though it shares the same design as others minted around the same time, is an extremely rare denomination. I was unable to find any other obols of this city sold, and its issues are already rare.
Demetrias founded by Demetrios I Poliorketes, who moved the inhabitants of Neleia, Pagasai, Ormenion, Rhizos, Sepias, Olizon, Boebe, and Iolkos to create it.
