Traianopolis was one of the few cities whose foundation date is known, having been founded in 109 CE by settlers from Grimenothyritae after they petitioned Hadrian. Its coinage depicts the emperor Trajan, for whom it is named, even though none of its coinage was minted during his lifetime.
Its location was debated even in ancient times. Stephanus of Byzantium wrongly placed it in Mysia, though today it’s generally agreed it was near Ortaköy, Turkey.
