Castulo was the capital of the Iberian Oretrani tribe, which through a marriage to Hannibal became allies of Carthage. It was here that Hasdrubal Barca crushed the Romans in 211 BCE.
The Romans eventually took the city by coming to an agreement with the inhabitants, and Scripio Africanus intimidated them into massacring Illiturgis.
