Thyateira was originally called Pelopia and then Semiramis before it was renamed by Seleukos I Nikatorl for his daughter. Around the time this coin was made, the city was famous for its dying and served as the center of the purple cloth trade – which was the royal color and extremely expensive.

Seleukos I Nikator renames Semiramis, Lydia to Thyateira in honor of his newborn daughter.
