Mothone was a famed city in antiquity. It was front and center during the Second Messenianic War, when Pylos and Mothone were the last strongholds against Sparta. After the war it was given to residents of Nauplia.
During the Peloponnesian War, Athens attempted to take Mothone, but were repulsed by Sparta.
