Arne was the daughter of Aeolus, who was a son of Helen, and became the mother of another Aeolus by Poseidon. She was born as a foal because her mother had been transformed into a horse, but was changed back into a human. She served as the nurse of Poseidon when he was young, who impregnated her with Aeolus and Boeotus, the founders of the like-named regions.

Enraged, her father blinded her and placed her sons on Mount Pelion. Her sons escaped and later rescued her, then Poseidon restored her sight.
