Malaga was founded in 770 BCE by Phoenicians from Tyre and remained under Phoenician control – eventually by Carthage – until it was taken by Rome in 218 BCE. During the reign of Domitian, its free-born citizens were granted Roman citizenship. The city prospered under the Roman Empire.
