Selge, whose ruins are not far from the city of Antalya, is one of the few ancient ruins I’ve actually visited. Unfortunately, I visited before I had a full appreciation of the history, but I still at least have some photos and memories.
During ancient times, Selge was an immensely powerful city and the strongest in all of Psidia. It was located in a very fertile area, but due to the landscape the city was well protected by natural features. A Roman bridge still functions in the area.
Owing to their strength and defenses, the city was never overrun by an enemy. When Alexander the Great arrived, they offered him their friendship, which he accepted. Throughout most of antiquity, the city enjoyed freedom and independence.
