Tyndaris was the youngest of the cities in Magna Grecia, having been founded only at the beginning of the 4th century by Dionysos of Syracuse. Many of the original inhabitants were exiles from Messana. Given its strategic position, it was hotly contested between the Romans and the Carthaginians in the First Punic War.
Its ruins are extant, including an amphitheater similar to that in Tauromenion.
