Troizen was a friendly city to Athens and during the second Persian War, when Athens was destroyed, its inhabitants fled to Troizen.

According to mythology, Aithra, the daughter of the city’s found Pittheus, slept with both Aigaios and Poseidon in the same night and became pregnant with Theseus in Troizen. It is also the setting of Euripides play Hippolytus.
