Tlos was one of the largest and most powerful cities in Lycia. Founded in the 15th century BCE, it lost its independence with the rise of Persia, but soon became a wealthy city within that empire. Later, it was granted autonomy from Rhodes by Rome. The city at one point housed a thriving Jewish community.
In mythology, Pegasus and Bellerophon lived in Tlos. The ruins of the city have been found and today are a significant tourist attraction.
