Stratos was the capital of the Akarnanian League. Interestingly, though it was the largest and best fortified city in Akarnania, its coins are rare.
Stratos was involved in pretty much every war at the time. You could in fact call them “war fashionistas” since they took turns against Sparta, Athens, and Thebes at various points. One smart thing they did do, though, was join on the side of the Romans. Though the city was never destroyed by them, in 28 BCE the nearby city of Nicopolis was constructed and the population was forced to move there.
A fair portion of the ancient city remains, including the remnants of a temple to Zeus, some of the city walls, and the rough amphitheater.
