Today, Skodra is the city of Shkodër, Albania, and has a long history of settlement. The city was the home of Kings Agron and Gentius and Queen Teuta. This coin was minted during the time of Gentius, who was the last Illyrian king. For most of his rule, he was allied with the Romans against Macedon. However, in 169 BCE he switched sides and joined Perseus, which costed him his rule.
He was quickly defeated by the Romans in 168 BCE, with the campaign not even lasting thirty days. He was brought to Rome as a captive and his ultimate fate is unknown. Skodra then came under the control of Rome.
