Perperene is believed to be where the famed historian Thukydides died. In antiquity, it was famous for its copper mines and vineyards, which probably explains why these are copper coins depicting grapes.

Perperene was mentioned by Strabo and was listed in Athenian tribute lists.

Later on, the city was renamed to Theodosiopolis.
