This is currently my only coin from Kefalonia, although I hope that text goes out of date soon. 😊 Pale was one of the four main cities on the island, which in those days had a far larger population than it does today. By some estimates, just the city of Same had more people than the entire island does today, and its extensive ruins give some credence to that.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the chance to get over to Pale while I was in Kefalonia. I did visit Same and I got lost trying to find Kranion. Pale was in a peninsula that was far from our hotel.

There are some theories that the peninsula where Pale resides was the actual home of Odysseus. The trees mentioned in The Odyssey match more closely that of Kefalonia, and recent studies have suggested that water separated Pale and the peninsula from the rest of the island during the time of the Trojan War. Homer also mentioned that Ithaca was reachable by foot, which would have been the case then for Pale but was not for Ithaca itself.

431 BCE

Kranion, Same, Pale, and Pronnoi join the Athenian alliance without force.

218 BCE

Philip V attempts to take Pale, but finds it too difficult and leaves.
