Like a number of ancient cities, the location of Orthagoreia is still unknown. It may have been the ancient name of Stageira, which was the birthplace of Aristotle. That city was later destroyed by Philip II, though since Aristotle was such a nice guy, he agreed to rebuild it. Some sources state that the city celebrated Aristotle with a festival long after his death.

According to Strabo, Orthagoreia was between Maroneia and the “region around Serrhion.”

The legend on this coin looks very similar to other Macedonian cities of the era, before they were conquered by Philip II.
