Lugdunum corresponded with the modern-day city of Lyon, France. Founded on an existing Gallic city in 43 BCE, it became a critical city in the western half of the Roman Empire. Its population may have reached 200,000. Its name may have come from the Celtic deity Lugus.

The city had a major impact on the Roman Empire. For some time, it was the sole producer of silver and gold coins. It was also the birthplace of the emperor Claudius and was visited by Tiberius and Caligula.
