Krithote was originally an Athenian colony founded by Militiades. In 365 BCE it was captured together with Sestos by the Athenian Timetheos. By the time Strabo wrote about it, the city was in ruins.

The city appears in a number of ancient sources, but only for its geographical position. We know very little about its history.
