Colonia Agrippinensis became the city of Cologne, Germany. Originally inhabited by the Eborones tribe, the city was founded in 38 BCE when the Roman general Agrippa resettled a Germanic tribe named the Ubii there.

It was mostly a garrison town until 50 CE, when it was elevated to colony status by Claudius, under the request of his wife Agrippina the Younger, who was born there. It eventually became the capital of the province of Germania Inferior.
