Arpi was supposedly founded by Diomedes, who traveled to Italy after the Trojan War. The area was famous for horse-breeding, which is why a horse appears on most of its coins.

Arpi was an early ally of Rome, and sent them reinforcements in the war against Pyrrhos. After the Battle of Cannae, they switched their allegiance to Carthage until it was recaptured in 213 BCE. The city quickly lost importance after that.
