Anazarbus was an important city during Roman times and was the capital of Cilicia Secunda. The city experienced many names. Originally called Kyinda, it was renamed to Diocaesarea and then Anazarbus. After it was rebuilt by Justinian I from a major earthquake, it was renamed to Justinopolis. Under the Armenian kings it was renamed to Anazarva. There is also evidence of a city called Kundo rebelling against the Assyrians in the 7th century BCE, but we’re not sure if it’s the same city.

Anazarbus was part of the kingdom of Tarkondimotos I until it was annexed by Rome. It then became an important center, and the poet Oppian lived there. The ruins of the site still exist and may be visited, though are badly damaged. Their location is very picturesque. Excavations are ongoing there.
