Macedon, Koinon of Macedon
Pseudo-autonomous issue. Time of Severus Alexander (222-235)
Ӕ 28,3mm, 11.4g
Diademed head of Alexander the Great right, around ALEXANDROU, dotted border.
R/ Alexander standing facing, head left, holding reverted spear and parazonium, around MAKEDONWN BN, dotted border.
AMNG III 517
This is an intriguing type for the reverse, containing Alexander standing and holding a reverted spear and parazonium. This pose was commonly depicted on Roman coins, and thus I don’t believe it has any particular meaning other than the depiction of a Macedonian general in a Roman pose.
The text contains Β NE, thus indicating it was minted when Beroea had a second neokoros, or roughly after 231 CE. Attributions of other examples appear divided between Gordian III and Severus Alexander. Gordian III would be the statistically more likely choice.
This type, though not common, seems to have been minted widely by Koinon of Macedon standards based on the number of examples known.
