Aitna was originally a city of the Sicels, and its location is still debated today, though the majority agree with that listed here. It is believed to have been populated initially by colonists that Hieron I had installed in Katana, who were then expelled. They then occupied the fortified site from the locals and renamed it to Aitna. Its previous name was Inessa.
During the Sicilian expedition, Athens attempted to take it without success. Later, Campanian mercenaries were installed there by Dionysios of Syracuse, and they stayed loyal to him through the Carthaginian expedition. By the time of Cicero, it was mentioned as an important city that suffered under Verres. After this, we know little.
