Sanaos was located by a salt lake also called Sanaos. Today, it serves as the largest sodium sulfate reserves in Turkey. The city and lake also went by the name Anaua.

The city was passed by Xerxes on his way to Kolossai. Ancient inscriptions suggest that Sanaos was subject to Apameia at one point.

Its coinage is extremely rare.
