Like many of the Cyclades, Syros has been inhabited for a very long time. Archeological evidence shows that it was at least 5000 years ago.
Syros was the home of Eumaios, who Homer spent a lot of time describing and who was a strong friend of Odysseus – and in fact grew up with him.
Pythagoras’ teacher Pherekydes was also from Syros.
The coinage of Sardis is often confused with Syros.
