Teuthrania was supposedly founded in ancient times by the king Teuthras. He was the father of Axylos, who was mentioned in the Iliad and died in the Trojan War. Teuthras was featured in several mythological stories, often involving Telephos, who was either his son or an adopted son whose true father was Herakles.
According to Strabo, the city was located between Elaia, Pitane, and Atarneios. In 486 BCE, Teuthrania was one of the cities given by Darius I to the Spartan king Demaratos.
In the epic poem Cypria, Teuthrania is initially mistaken by the Greeks for Troy.
