Hyrcania received its name because it was located on the Hyrcanian Plain. The Hyrcanian Plain was so named because the Persians supposedly settled a large number of Hyrcanians there. I looked up why the Hyrcanians were called so, and learned it was because they lived in the region of Hyrcania.
According to Pliny, Macedonians later joined the Hyrcanians in Hyrcania on the Hyrcanian Plain.
Not much more is known about the city.
