The ruins of Aphrodisias are today a Unesco World Heritage site, located near the modern day city of Geyre. During Roman times, it was the provincial capital of Caria and was famous for the Carian marble mined nearby.
Its Temple of Aphrodite was well-known and many of its columns still stand. This coin was minted during Hellenistic times, whereas the majority of the city’s coinage are Roman provincials.
