Kolossai was first mentioned in the 17th century BCE and by the time of Herodotus was a “great city in Phrygia.” It was large enough to house the troops of Xerxes I on his way to attack Greece and was also mentioned by Xenophon and Strabo, though by Strabo’s time it had lost much of its significance.

Tissaphernes is lured out and killed at Kolossai by Tithraustes, supported by Pharnabazos and Parysatis, the mother of Artaxerxes II.
