Karkinitis sits roughly in the location where the modern day city of Yevpatoria in the Crimea resides.

The ancient city was mentioned by both Herodotus and Strabo, though little else other than its location was given.

The city later become part of Mithridates VI Eupator’s kingdom, and the modern day city is derived from his name Eupator.
