Like many cities, Tios was founded by colonists of Miletos in the 7th century BCE. It was the birthplace of Philetairos, who started the Attalid dynasty.

Under Queen Amastris, all of the inhabitants of Tios, along with Sesamos, Kromna, and Kytoros, were forced to move to found her new city Amastris.

However, according to Strabo the residents of Tios eventually left and in 282 BCE regained its autonomy.

The city of Amastris is founded by Amastris, a Persian princess and the niece of the Persian king Darius III. She establishes the city by combining four smaller settlements: Sesamos, Kytoros, Tios, and Kromna.
