Today, it’s debated whether Hybla Megan and Hybla Megara were the same city. So far, we’ve only found one of them, so we think so. The city obtained its name from Megara, who originally colonized it. The story, as told by Thucydides, is that settlers under a Greek named Lamis arrived at the spot at the same time Leontini was founded. They chose to instead join the Chalkidians at Leontini instead of found a new city, but eventually they quarreled with each other and the Megarians were expelled and thus settled elsewhere. After the death of Lamis, they resettled again, this time at the site of Hybla Megala.
It appears the site was resettled after its destruction and slaughter/sale of its inhabitants by Gelon of Syracuse in 483 BCE, but we don’t know the specifics.
