While there is some debate on exactly when Stratonikeia was founded, most today follow that it was by Antiochos I Soter, in honor of his wife, Stratonike. For what it’s worth, Strabo was the one who assigned that to Antiochos, and he probably had better sources than we do now. It was founded over the much older village, Idrias.

The city was a major presence during Seleukid times, as its kings made sure it was complete with the latest monuments and buildings.

The ruins of Stratonikeia today are well preserved and may be visited.
