Italica was an ancient city located close to Santiponce in the province of Seville. It was founded by the Roman general Scipio, who placed veterans of the Italic wars there, and thus named the city for them. It was the first Roman colonia in Iberia. It soon became a prosperous city, though nearby Hispalis (later Seville) was always larger.
The Roman emperor Theodosius is believed to have been born at Italica, as well as his son Arcadius. The city waned in the third century, when the course of the Guadalquivir River changed. Some of the ruins of the city are still viewable. They are visitable, but require some imagination.
