Tomis is now the city of Constanța, Romania. It was colonized by settlers from Miletos in the 6th century BCE and was in a protected location with a good harbor. It grew to be a member, and maybe the capital, of an alliance of cities in the area – including Dionysopolis, Mesembria, Istria, Kallatis, and Odessos.
It later became a member of the Delian League, until taken by Rome in 29 BCE. The modern city has grown over the ancient one, and thus few ruins are visible.
