Tripolis was better known as Tripolis on the Meander, and the ruins of the city are still extant. It existed on the borders between Lydia, Phrygia, and Caria. Even in ancient times, its location was debated. Pliny the Elder put it in Lydia, while Stephanus of Byzantium placed it in Caria. Today, too, it may be listed in either region.
