Dokemeion was famous during Roman times for its marble. Today, the best reminder is the floor of the Pantheon, which was made with Dokimeion marble. Due to its purple veins, it was a favorite construction material by Roman emperors.
The city is believed to have been founded by Dokimos, who was a general under Alexander the Great. Its original inhabitants considered themselves Macedonians. Strabo mentioned that it was located near Synnada.
