Pautalia was one of the great cities of Thrace and was famous in antiquity for its temple to Asklepios, whose daughter Hygieia is depicted on this coin. The city either did not exist or was small during Hellenistic times, but flourished under the Romans.

Archeology has shown that the city was large and contained numerous temples. The general Belisarios was born in Pautalia.

The ruins lie near Kyustendil, Bulgaria.
